Peter Obi Gives Strong Directive To UNN Concerning His Academic Records

The 2027 presidential candidate under the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has authorized the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, to grant public access to his academic files following court action demanding Certified True Copies of his admission entries and university certificates.

Releasing an official statement via his X handle on Tuesday, Obi affirmed that he harbors no reservations concerning the disclosure of his Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy, which was conferred upon him by the institution in 1984, alongside all associated academic files tracing his study period.

His declaration came as a direct reaction to online chatter surrounding a court motion instituted by an applicant seeking verified duplicates of his graduation documents and entry qualifications.

“I wish to state clearly that I have absolutely no objection to the release of these records,” Obi said.

The former Anambra governor formally requested the administrative board of UNN to unveil his academic transcripts, certificates, and pertinent files to any legitimate inquirer within legal boundaries.

“I respectfully request that the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, within the limits permitted by law, make available, upon legitimate request, my academic certificates, records, and other official documents relating to my admission and studies at the University,” he said.

Extending this authorization beyond Nsukka, Obi gave unreserved permission to all domestic and international learning centers he previously attended to release his educational histories under statutory rules.

He emphasized his dedication to open governance and ethical oversight for political aspirants, while insisting that such investigations ought to be executed impartially and legally.

“I believe strongly in transparency and accountability, particularly for those who seek the privilege of public office. Public scrutiny must, however, be fair, lawful, and applied consistently to everyone who seeks to lead our nation,” he said.

Targeting the 2027 general elections, the politician stated that he welcomes lawful inquiries regarding his background, training, and achievements.

“As a presidential candidate seeking the trust of Nigerians to lead our country, I welcome legitimate public interest in my background, qualifications, and record. I am prepared to subject myself to the level of scrutiny that should reasonably be expected of anyone seeking the highest office in our country,” he said.

Furthermore, he threw down the gauntlet to rival presidential contenders across political parties, tasking them to publish their educational credentials and verification papers for public inspection.

“I encourage every presidential candidate to make their educational qualifications and relevant records available for legitimate public scrutiny,” Obi said.

He noted that undergoing background verification should serve as a mechanism to reinforce civic trust and raise governance standards rather than being treated as political harassment.

“Doing so should not be regarded as an inconvenience or an attack. Rather, it is an opportunity to strengthen public confidence, promote accountability, and rebuild the trust of Nigerians in those who seek to govern them,” he said.

Concluding his message, Obi highlighted that political stewardship must embody foundational principles necessary for national growth, centered on integrity, openness, and institutional reverence.

“I therefore welcome the scrutiny of my academic background and remain committed to the principle that those who ask Nigerians for their trust must also be willing to earn that trust through openness and accountability,” Obi said.
