The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast thunderstorms and rainfall across several parts of the country spanning Monday through Wednesday.
In its weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, the agency warned that strong winds might precede rainfall in affected areas and urged the public to adhere to safety precautions.
Monday Weather Outlook
For Monday morning, NiMet predicted thunderstorms accompanied by light rain over parts of Taraba and Kebbi states, transitioning to scattered thunderstorms with moderate rain over parts of the North-East, Kaduna, Taraba, and Kebbi later in the day.
“For the North-Central region, thunderstorms accompanied by light rain are expected over parts of Niger State during the morning hours,” the agency stated. “Later during the afternoon or evening hours, thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rain are expected over most parts of the region.”
Across the southern region, morning cloudy skies are expected to yield isolated thunderstorms and light rain over parts of Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River, with widespread light rain and thunderstorms developing later in the afternoon or evening.
Tuesday Weather Outlook
On Tuesday, morning patches of cloud across the northern region will yield to thunderstorms and light rain over parts of Taraba, before expanding into moderate rain and thunderstorms across most northern states by afternoon and evening.
“For the North-Central region, partly cloudy skies are expected during the morning hours,” NiMet reported. “Later in the day, thunderstorms with moderate rain are expected over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Nasarawa and Plateau States.”
For the southern region, mostly cloudy skies on Tuesday morning will give way to thunderstorms and light rain over parts of Ebonyi, Enugu, Abia, and coastal South-South areas later in the day.
Wednesday Weather Outlook
On Wednesday morning, partly cloudy skies over the northern region will be accompanied by thunderstorms and moderate rain over Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, Kaduna, Adamawa, and Taraba states, spreading across most parts of the North later in the day.
In the North-Central region, partly cloudy morning skies will transition to isolated thunderstorms and light rain over parts of the FCT, Plateau, Niger, and Nasarawa, with moderate rain expected across most of the region by evening.
The southern region will experience morning cloudy skies, followed by afternoon and evening thunderstorms and moderate rain across most states.
Safety Advisory & Guidelines
NiMet urged the public to secure loose items to prevent wind hazards and advised drivers to refrain from motoring during heavy downpours.
“The public should take adequate precaution and ensure that loose objects are fastened to avoid collision,” NiMet stated.
Residents were further advised to disconnect electrical appliances during storms and stay clear of tall trees due to the risk of falling branches.
Airline operators were also directed to acquire updated airport-specific weather documentation for flight safety.
