Peoples Redemption Party presidential hopeful Donald Duke has cautioned that President Bola Tinubu is on course to retain power in 2027 unless major political rivals drop individual ambitions and form a cohesive coalition.

Speaking during a guest appearance on Channels Television’s morning current affairs segment, the former governor argued that a fractured ballot box heavily benefits the incumbent administration.

He noted that splitting voter loyalty among prominent figures like Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi would simply mirror the voting patterns of the 2023 polls, effectively handing the ruling party an easy path forward.

Comparing Nigeria’s political architecture to the two-party model in the United States, Duke criticized the tendency to splinter major opposition movements, stating, “We don’t understand what we’re doing. In the United States, which is the system we’ve largely just copied verbatim from, they have two major parties. If you fragmented the Democrats, for instance, into two or three other parties, the Republicans will remain in office forever. That’s what we’re doing.”

Reflecting on previous electoral missteps, he highlighted how the 2023 race was undermined when major challengers split their bases, adding, “In 2023, we fragmented, and all the major opposition came from the PDP. You had Vice President Atiku from the PDP. You had Peter, Labour at the time, and you had Kwankwaso. They fragmented.”
