The African Democratic Congress (ADC) Presidential Campaign Council has strongly criticized Rabiu Kwankwaso, the presidential running mate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), accusing him of backing Peter Obi out of narrow self-interest and personal ambition.
Kola Ologbondiyan, Director of Media and Publicity for the ADC Presidential Campaign Council, asserted that Kwankwaso’s recent actions do not reflect a genuine commitment to Peter Obi or the broader opposition goal of defeating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
Ologbondiyan issued the rebuke in response to Kwankwaso’s public call asking ADC presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race.
The controversy intensified after Kwankwaso disclosed that he had engaged notable Fulani stakeholder groups to persuade the former Vice President to step aside in favor of Obi.
Reacting to Kwankwaso’s maneuver, Ologbondiyan labeled the remarks as reckless, self-serving, and a calculated effort to advance President Tinubu’s political interests by sowing division among opposition ranks.
In an official statement detailing the council’s position, the ADC spokesperson noted, The African Democratic Congress Presidential Campaign Council (ADC-PCC) has berated Senator Kwankwaso over his call for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to step down for Mr Peter Obi, describing the statement as reckless, self-serving and a desperate attempt to advance President Bola Tinubu’s political interests ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Ologbondiyan added, Nigerians are not fooled. There is a growing perception that Kwankwaso’s support for Peter Obi is driven more by his personal ambition than by a genuine commitment to the opposition’s collective objective of defeating the APC.
The campaign council concluded by urging opposition leaders and voters to remain focused on national challenges, maintaining that Atiku Abubakar remains the most formidable candidate capable of building a winning cross-regional coalition in 2027.
