Oyo State Governor and presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Seyi Makinde, has clarified his decision to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the upcoming 2027 general elections, emphasizing that the race is about competence and national rescue rather than regional solidarity.

Addressing delegates on Thursday during the APM South-West Town Hall meeting in Akure, Ondo State, Makinde explained that his presidential bid transcends geopolitical origins and focuses on providing effective governance to reverse the nation’s economic and security challenges.

Reflecting on the 2023 presidential election, the governor recalled supporting Tinubu—despite belonging to an opposition party at the time—under the assumption that the administration would establish a inclusive and highly competent government.

I supported the current President, even though in another party at that time, because I thought we would do what is right for the country. I thought we would have a government of national unity and a government of national competence, Makinde stated.

Assessment of the incumbent administration’s performance led the APM candidate to conclude that those expectations have not been realized.

Is it a government of national competence? Is it a government of national unity? The answer is no, he noted.

Makinde recalled that in 2023, he and other aggrieved Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors advocated for a power shift to the Southern region following former President Muhammadu Buhari’s eight-year tenure, driven by principles of equity and justice.

However, he expressed disappointment that the expectations of bringing together capable hands across regional lines to tackle national issues were unfulfilled, noting that promises made to citizens were broken.

Reiterating the core mandate of his candidacy, Makinde asserted that the 2027 presidential contest revolves around resetting the country’s governance model and rescuing its economy rather than geopolitical sentiments.
