INEC Rejects Abure As Labour Party’s National Chairman, Gives Reason

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declined to recognize Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party, despite keeping his name on its website under the list of political party chairmen.

This development was revealed in a counter-affidavit filed in the Federal High Court in Abuja, in response to a lawsuit by the Labour Party challenging its exclusion from INEC’s refresher training for uploading party agents ahead of the Edo and Ondo state governorship elections.

In the document, INEC maintained that Abure’s tenure as the Labour Party’s National Chairman expired in June 2024.

The Labour Party has been embroiled in a leadership dispute since June, following a congress in Anambra state that extended the tenure of Abure’s leadership.

This decision has been contested by several party members, including former deputy chairman Callistus Okafor, Abia State Governor Alex Otti, and the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, who recently held a joint national congress to address the ongoing leadership crisis.
