While in Nigeria, Harry and Meghan did not represent the UK government. Richard Montgomery, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, clarified that the couple was visiting in a private capacity, stating, “It’s great that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are visiting Nigeria… But they are not on official business.”

Their failure to sing the British national anthem during public events has also drawn criticism, with royal butler Paul Burrell commenting on the significance of such traditions in royal visits.

He expressed confusion about why the anthem was played if the couple did not sing along.

Additionally, Harry’s inspection of troops at the Nigerian Defence Headquarters has been labeled inappropriate, especially given that his military titles were revoked three years ago.

Critics found this act particularly cringeworthy, highlighting the ongoing tensions surrounding the couple’s status and actions.
