Trouble Looms As Protesters Set Date To Storm Lagos Streets

#EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protesters in Lagos have vowed to escalate their actions by taking to the streets on Monday if the government fails to meet their demands.

One of the protest coordinators, Mr. Hassan Soweto, a member of the Youth Rights Campaign, made this declaration while addressing the crowd at Gani Fawehinmi Park on Saturday.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), a court order obtained before the start of the nationwide protests had limited all demonstrations in Lagos to the park. If the protesters proceed with their plan, they would be defying this court order.

Soweto stated that if their demands were not met by Sunday night, they would stop occupying the park in Ojota and begin marching through the streets, with plans to head towards Alausa, the seat of the Lagos State government.

He also announced there would be no protests at the park on Sunday, encouraging residents to attend their places of worship to pray for peace in the country.

Soweto called on the police to monitor the activities of suspected hoodlums who might try to disrupt the protests at the park.

NAN observed that the police had barricaded the service lane on Ikorodu Road for the protesters, leaving the BRT and two other lanes open for motorists. More vehicles were seen on the roads on Saturday compared to the low traffic on Thursday and Friday.

Commercial activities in Ojota and surrounding areas also appeared to be picking up, with more shops reopening for business.

The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Mr. Adegoke Fayoade, continued to lead security efforts to ensure the protection of protesters for the third consecutive day. The Command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed to NAN that no protesters were arrested on Friday.
