Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has announced the end of the longstanding practice that permitted retired permanent secretaries in the state civil service to continue working on contract after their official retirement.
This practice has faced criticism for obstructing career advancement for lower-level employees and is perceived as a way for politicians to reward loyal supporters.
At the swearing-in ceremony for six new Permanent Secretaries at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Friday, Governor Fubara emphasized the importance of allowing new individuals to assume these positions.
He urged the newly appointed Permanent Secretaries to focus on the state’s interests and warned that any misconduct would lead to dismissal.
Following the ceremony, the new Permanent Secretaries were promptly provided with official cars.
