The Edo State Government has delayed the resumption of schools due to increasing petrol prices and the difficulties faced by parents and guardians.
While most schools across Nigeria are scheduled to reopen on Monday, September 9, the Edo State Government has announced that the start of the new term for all public and private schools will be postponed “until further notice.”

The statement, issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Ojo Akin-Longe, explained the decision.

The statement read in part “An official statement from the government has directed that schools remain closed due to the tension from the recent increase in fuel prices and the challenges faced by parents and guardians.
“The government urged parents, guardians and caregivers to monitor the activities of their children and wards closely, given the current situation and the rising tension caused by the fuel price hike.”
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) recently raised the pump price of petrol to ₦855 per litre at its retail outlets, leading to long queues at filling stations.
Following this increase by the state oil company, independent petroleum marketers have also raised their prices to over ₦900 per litre, while black market sellers are charging more than ₦1000 per litre.
