The Federal Government is set to implement a new minimum wage, effective from July 29, 2024.
It has also approved revisions to the salary structure for lecturers, doctors, military personnel, and other civil servants.
This development follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the government and the Labour Union on Friday, establishing a ₦70,000 new minimum wage.
According to a statement from the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, signed by the Head of Information and Public Relations, Eno Olotu, the committee on civil servant salaries confirmed that the new wage structure will take effect on July 29, 2024.

The agreement is part of the resolutions reached during the committee’s meeting in Abuja. The committee also recommended that the wage award, which had been discontinued by the Federal Government, should be paid up until July 28, 2024.
Didi Walson-Jack, the Head of Civil Service of the Federation and Chairperson of the Committee, emphasized that the government considered the current economic situation before reaching its decision. She also praised the committee members for their dedication and hard work during the negotiations.
The HCSF said, “Both the Trade Union and the Government sides have agreed on the Consequential Adjustments in Salaries arising from the new minimum wage of N70,000.
She further revealed that all members thoroughly reviewed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and signed the necessary copies, concluding the process by handing them over to representatives from both parties.
She described the assignment as the shortest and most peaceful negotiation ever conducted, noting that the signed MOU would now be submitted to the Federal Government for further action.
In his remarks, the National Chairman of the Joint Negotiating Council, Comrade Benjamin Anthony, who represented the Trade Union side, praised the Head of Civil Service of the Federation (HCSF) and expressed satisfaction with the committee’s efforts.
