Protests erupted on Thursday at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secretariat in Port Harcourt ahead of the upcoming Local Government elections.

There was heavy security presence as protesters gathered in large numbers.

The demonstration caused traffic disruptions, with security personnel struggling to manage the crowd.

Protesters, carrying placards and banners, chanted slogans and marched along the highway.

One banner read, “TAI people say no to lawlessness. Say no to LGA election. RSIEC must obey court judgment. SIM must obey court judgment.”

This protest comes as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) confirmed it has yet to release the 2023 Voter Register to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC).

Johnson Alalibo, the Resident Electoral Commissioner, stated during a Wednesday press briefing that although RSIEC had applied for the Register, it was withheld for administrative reasons.

He also noted that the Commission received a court judgment from Abuja preventing them from releasing the register.

The Local Government election is slated for October 5, 2024.
