What Transpired When New Rivers CP Visited, Inspected LG Secretariats [PHOTOS]

The new Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, Mustapha Bala, conducted inspection visits on Wednesday to several local government council secretariats affected by Monday’s violence in the region.

This inspection followed a meeting with Chijioke Ihunwo at the Obio/Akpor council in Rumuodumaya.

Bala also visited Emohua to assess the damage firsthand, before proceeding to Isiokpo in Ikwerre LGA and Eleme local government.

In a video shared online, Bala was seen inspecting the secretariats accompanied by both unarmed civilians and armed security personnel.

These visits come in the wake of significant political violence and tension within the state, where clashes erupted in at least four local government areas.

Parts of the buildings in Eleme, Ikwerre, and Emohua council premises were reportedly set ablaze, and sporadic gunfire was heard in Ahoada East as resistance against the new council officials unfolded.

The unrest followed the withdrawal of police officers who had been securing the 23 council secretariats, a decision made by the Commissioner of Police.

Despite the withdrawal, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the All Progressives Congress (APC), and the police chose not to participate in the process that led to the election of the new local government chairmen. However, Governor Siminalayi Fubara insisted that the elections take place on Saturday.

In an atmosphere of heightened tension, the Action People’s Party (APP) secured 22 out of 23 chairmanship positions in the oil-rich state, while the Action Alliance (AA) claimed one seat.

On Sunday, Fubara swore in the 23 newly elected local government chairmen, but several of them faced attacks upon assuming office on Monday, with some council secretariats set ablaze by political opponents.
