A woman identified as Miss Ijeoma Franca has been apprehended while attempting to smuggle a substance suspected to be Indian hemp into the Medium Security Prison in Kuje, Abuja.
The illicit substance, hidden inside a carton of biscuits, was uncovered during a routine search conducted by prison officers on visitors.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the spokesperson for the Federal Capital Territory Prison Command, Humphrey Chukwuedo, the suspect revealed during interrogation that a man named Daniel had hired her to deliver the package to his brother, Miracle Amechi, who is an inmate at Kuje Prison.

“During the interrogation, she claimed that one Mr. Daniel had engaged her to take some package to his brother, Mr. Miracle Amechi who is an inmate in Kuje prison and the package includes a carton of spicy biscuit, rolls of milk and milo, shirts and #2500 and that she was ignorant of the real contents of the carton of spicy biscuit,” Chukwuedo stated.
He further stated that Fraca had been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for appropriate action.

In a related development, the Controller of Prisons for the FCT Command, Sylvester Nwakuche, issued a stern warning to visitors, urging them to refrain from smuggling illicit drugs to inmates or promoting their use in any way.
Nwakuche emphasized that the use of hard drugs not only undermines the reformation and rehabilitation process but also poses serious risks to the health of the prisoners.
He further appealed to the general public to support “the doggedness of the prison authorities headed by the Controller-General of Prisons, Ahmed Jafaru in ensuring that the aims of imprisonment are achieved in order to have a safe and sound society.”
