Fact Check: Did Viral Video Show Ondo Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa Fighting With A Woman In The UK?

A video of a man engaged in a heated argument with a woman has gone viral on social media in Nigeria. Many users are alleging that it features Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa in a confrontation with his “mistress” in London, UK.

A 12 October 2024 post reads, in part: “What a disgrace to Nigerians and her  politicians, can you believe this is the Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa  the APC Ondo state governor having a battle with a side chic in London.”

The post features a photo of Aiyedatiwa along with a video that captures others appearing to intervene in the altercation.

This incident arises just weeks ahead of the Ondo state governorship election set for November 16, in which Aiyedatiwa represents the All Progressives Congress party.

But does the video show Aiyedatiwa fighting with a woman in London?

‘Fake news’

While the resemblance between the two men is clear, some facial features distinguish them.

Aiyedatiwa’s beard covers more of his chin, whereas the man in the video has a thinner beard.

The governor has also slightly altered his beard style, as evident in a video from early October during his campaign for the election.

Another difference is that Aiyedatiwa’s nose is wider, while the man’s nose appears sharper. Additionally, the man is gap-toothed, while the governor has no gaps in his teeth.

In a statement, Aiyedatiwa’s media aide Allen Sowore said the video was “blackmail and false news to tarnish the governor’s image”.

“For the benefit of the unsuspecting public who may be swayed by the video at first glance, it is crucial to clarify that the man in the video is not the Governor of Ondo State. A closer examination of the video reveals several striking differences,” part of the statement reads.
