President Bola Tinubu has approved the dissolution of the Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Anambra State, and the removal of Prof. Bernard Ifeanyi Odoh, the newly appointed Vice Chancellor, and Mrs. Rosemary Ifoema Nwokike, the university’s registrar.
The council, chaired by Ambassador Greg Ozumba Mbadiwe, included members Hafiz Oladejo, Augustine Onyedebelu, Engr. Amioleran Osahon, and retired General Funsho Oyeneyin.
A statement issued on Wednesday by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga stated that the dissolution and dismissals followed reports that the council had illegally appointed an unqualified vice-chancellor, bypassing due process.

This controversial appointment led to tensions between the university’s Senate and its governing council, prompting the Federal Government to intervene.
The government expressed concern over the council’s apparent disregard for the university’s governing regulations during the selection process.
In a related move, President Tinubu also approved the removal of Engr. Ohieku Muhammed Salami as Pro-chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal University of Health Sciences in Otukpo, Benue State.
Salami’s dismissal followed his unlawful actions, including suspending the Vice-Chancellor without adhering to proper procedures.
Despite a directive from the Federal Ministry of Education to reverse the suspension, Salami ignored the instruction and resorted to abusive and threatening behavior towards ministry officials, including the Permanent Secretary.
The Federal Government emphasized that university councils are responsible for ensuring the smooth functioning of university activities in line with the laws establishing each institution.
President Tinubu cautioned all university councils to avoid causing disruptions, reaffirming that his government is committed to advancing the country’s education standards.
