Foods To Eat When You Have A Stomach Ulcer

Certain foods in an ulcer diet can support your body’s healing process from a peptic ulcer. One common cause of peptic ulcers is the bacterium Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), an infection that requires antibiotic treatment.

Peptic ulcers can also develop from prolonged use of certain medications, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Knowing what to eat and what to avoid can help manage and promote the healing of ulcers.

Foods to Include in an Ulcer Diet

An ulcer diet aims to reduce symptoms, prevent flare-ups, and reduce the risk of future ulcers by:

  • Correcting nutritional deficiencies that may contribute to symptoms
  • Providing the necessary protein and nutrients for healing
  • Avoiding foods that irritate the ulcer
  • Supporting the management of conditions like Crohn’s disease, celiac disease, or bacterial infections

While these foods can be beneficial, it is important to consult with your healthcare provider to determine the best dietary plan for your specific needs.

1. Fruits

Fresh or frozen fruits are rich in fiber and antioxidants, with polyphenols found in many fruits being particularly beneficial. Berries, apples, grapes, and pomegranates are some of the best options for promoting healing. If citrus fruits or juices like orange or grapefruit worsen acid reflux, it’s best to avoid them.

2. Vegetables

Leafy greens, colorful red and orange vegetables, and cruciferous vegetables (such as broccoli, cauliflower, and kale) are loaded with vitamins and antioxidants, which are great for overall health and healing. Cabbage, in particular, has been studied for its potential benefits in treating digestive issues. Avoid spicy peppers and tomatoes if they trigger reflux, and opt for softer, cooked vegetables, as raw vegetables can be more difficult to digest.

3. Lean Proteins

Skinless poultry, lean cuts of beef (like sirloin or tenderloin), fish, eggs, tofu, tempeh, and legumes (such as beans and peas) are excellent low-fat protein sources. Fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, and sardines are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which may reduce inflammation and help prevent further ulcer development. Research suggests that H. pylori infection and inflammation could also contribute to other health issues, including heart disease, and omega-3s may help mitigate this risk.

4. Fermented Dairy

Probiotic-rich foods like kefir and Greek yogurt provide beneficial bacteria and protein, making them excellent choices for an ulcer diet. Emerging research indicates that probiotics may play a role in managing peptic ulcers.

5. Breads and Grains

Whole grain breads and grains such as oats, quinoa, farro, millet, or sorghum are good sources of fiber. These are part of a healthy diet that supports digestive wellness, though it’s important to note that fiber itself has not been proven to prevent ulcers. Still, whole grains are beneficial for overall digestive health.

6. Herbs and Spices

While spicy foods should be avoided on an ulcer diet, certain mild herbs and spices can help support healing. Studies have shown that some spices, including turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, and garlic, have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, and may help kill H. pylori bacteria. These spices also provide antioxidants, making them valuable additions to an ulcer-friendly diet.
