The Nigeria Customs Service is mourning the devastating loss of Superintendent of Customs Kabiru Tijani, the officer in charge of the Oyo/Osun Area Command, along with his wife and their four children, who tragically lost their lives in a fire.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, December 2, 2024, around 3 a.m., when a fire engulfed their home in Ede, Osun State, resulting in the untimely deaths of the entire family.
In a statement released on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, Superintendent of Customs Kayode Wey, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, conveyed the deep sorrow of the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Ben Oramalugo, and the entire Command over this heartbreaking tragedy.

“The Nigeria Customs Service, Oyo/Osun Area Command, deeply mourns the tragic demise of SC Kabiru Tijani, his beloved wife, and their four children. SC Kabiru was a dedicated officer. His unwavering commitment to duty, particularly in coordinating and executing successful anti-smuggling operations, greatly contributed to the success of the Command,” the statement read.
Comptroller Oramalugo emphasized the crucial role Tijani played as the Officer in Charge of Operations, praising him as a dedicated and courageous officer with an unparalleled work ethic.
“SC Kabiru was a pillar of strength and resilience. His leadership in critical operations against smugglers earned him the respect of his peers and subordinates. He was not just an officer; he was a beacon of hope for a safer and more secure border,” Oramalugo said.
The statement also recognized the contributions of Tijani’s wife, a dedicated member of the Customs Officers’ Wives Association (COWA), Oyo/Osun Chapter.
“His wife was equally admired for her dedication to the welfare of the Customs community. She was a pillar of support to other officers’ families, offering encouragement and assistance in times of need,” the statement noted.
The Command urged the public to remain patient as investigations continue, while also addressing and dispelling the unfounded reports circulating about the cause of the fire.
“We understand that there are various speculations regarding the origin of the inferno. However, we appeal to the public to disregard such unfounded reports. Our priority at this time is to support the bereaved extended family and the lone child survivor while ensuring a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident,” the statement stated.

In a heartfelt display of solidarity, the Comptroller, speaking on behalf of the officers and personnel of the Oyo/Osun Area Command, expressed deep condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased.
“We are devastated by this loss. SC Kabiru and his family were an integral part of our Customs family. Their absence will be deeply felt by all of us. We pray for strength and comfort for their loved ones in this trying time,” Oramalugo expressed.
The Customs community, deeply affected by the tragedy, has now laid SC Kabiru Tijani and his family to rest following Islamic traditions.
As the Command continues to mourn, officers and colleagues have fondly remembered Tijani’s dedication and kindness, stressing that his legacy will serve as an enduring source of inspiration for the Oyo/Osun Area Command.
“He was more than a colleague; he was a friend, a mentor, and a role model. His legacy of integrity and service will live on in our hearts,” one officer said, fighting back tears.
The sole child survivor, who managed to escape the tragedy, is currently being cared for and supported by the Customs community.
The Command has assured that his well-being remains a top priority.
