Human rights lawyer and activist, Dele Farotimi, has been brought before a Magistrate Court in Ado-Ekiti, the capital of Ekiti State, on charges of defaming the respected legal figure, Aare Afe Babalola, SAN.
Farotimi, who was arrested in Lagos on Tuesday by officers of the Ekiti State Police Command, appeared in court on Wednesday morning at approximately 10:25 am.
The activist faces a 16-count charge of defamation, following allegations that he damaged Babalola’s reputation in his recently published book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System.
The charges claim that Farotimi made statements in the book that tarnished the image of Afe Babalola, the founder of Afe Babalola University and a prominent figure in Nigeria’s legal and academic circles.
