Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has strongly criticized the economic policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, claiming they have caused “unprecedented hunger, poverty, and mass unemployment” across Nigeria.
Oborevwori expressed opposition to the removal of the petroleum subsidy and the floating of the naira, arguing that any potential benefits from the subsidy removal have been negated by the devaluation of the naira and soaring inflation rates.
In a statement issued by his Executive Assistant on New Media, Mr. Felix Ofou, Oborevwori responded to remarks made by Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, the former Deputy Senate President (DSP), who had praised the economic policies of the Tinubu-led government.

At an APC event, Omo-Agege commended the government’s policies, asserting that they had led to increased federal allocations to state and local governments, improved economic growth, reduced imports, higher exports, and greater income for farmers.
Omo-Agege also claimed that despite the significant federal allocation to Delta State—over N900 billion in the past year and a half—there had been little progress in terms of meaningful projects or development.
He accused Governor Oborevwori of mismanaging state funds and using what remained to pay off debts, despite the rise in federal allocations and revenue from the 13% derivation.
Governor Oborevwori, however, rejected these accusations, questioning the value of the increased funds in the face of crippling inflation, the devaluation of the naira, and widespread poverty.
He asked, “Can we really talk of increased money in any state in Nigeria? What is the worth of such money in the face of galloping inflation, gross devaluation of the Naira, unparalleled hunger, mass poverty, mass unemployment, daily closure of major factories and multinationals in the country?
“Both the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have rightly stated that Tinubu’s economic policies are not working. That the policies have transformed Nigeria into the poverty capital of the world, with over 130 million of the population living below the poverty mark, he said.
Oborevwori stated that Tinubu’s economic policies have caused significant hardship for Nigerians and should not be considered a desirable model for Delta State.
“Is this the model that Omo-Agege is recommending for Delta to copy! A model that has unleashed economic hardship on the people? Why would anyone recommend APC’s T-pain as remedy to our woes? Obviously, this is not a path desirable for Deltans and one they would want to embrace at this time,” the statement added.
He advised caution against adopting policies that could worsen poverty and suffering.
