Civil rights activist and politician, Senator Shehu Sani, has proposed a solution to prevent additional items from being inserted into budgets presented by Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).
In a post on social media X on Tuesday, Sani said, “The only way to stop budget padding is to make a law that prohibits Lawmakers from tempering with budgets presented by Ministries Departments and Agencies,” the senator’s tweet partly said.

However, he quickly expressed doubts about whether lawmakers would be willing to pass laws to prevent such practices, or if such a bill would even be allowed to succeed.
“…but I don’t know who will make that law or how it can even pass the first reading,” he added.
His advice comes ahead of the scheduled meeting between the Appropriations Committee and key government officials, including the Minister of Finance, the Coordinating Minister of the Economy, the Minister of Budget & Economic Planning, and the Director-General of the Budget Office of the Federation, set for Tuesday, 7th January 2025.
Additionally, the budget defense sessions for the Appropriations Sub-committees, involving relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), will take place from Wednesday, 8th January to Wednesday, 15th January 2025.
