David Briggs, a former Commissioner for Works and later Water Resources during Peter Odili’s administrations in Rivers State, has dismissed claims made by Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, that he revived Odili’s political career.
Instead, Briggs credited Odili with playing a key role in Wike’s political rise.
Speaking to journalists in Port Harcourt on Saturday, Briggs explained that Wike’s second term as Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area was secured through Odili’s intervention.

According to Briggs, Odili ensured Wike’s name was reinstated on the nomination list, thus enabling his continued political progression.
Currently serving as Chairman of the Rivers State Universal Basic Education Board, Briggs urged the public to disregard Wike’s statements about Odili, labeling the FCT Minister as someone who thrives on division.
“Wike as a person cannot and will not survive where there is peace, and that is the problem we have in Rivers State today”, he said.

Briggs also accused Wike of provoking crises to remain politically relevant, pointing to the recent calm in Rivers State’s political landscape following a court ruling that reinstated the state’s federal allocations.
“If you note since after the court judgement concerning the release of federal allocation to the state government, the state had been quiet. Rivers State was fast enjoying peace and Wike had just created the problems so that he will be the beneficiary.
He also claimed that Wike’s political rise, including his bid for the governorship, was made possible by the support of Odili and former First Lady, Patience Jonathan. This claim was backed by a viral video in which Patience Jonathan introduced Wike to Odili for political endorsement.
Briggs condemned Wike’s comments, calling them an insult to both Odili and the people of Rivers, while highlighting Odili’s crucial role in shaping the state’s political framework.
“That is an insult not only to Peter Odili, but to Rivers State and to those of us who are his students and political children”
“I say so because Wike was not in any way our contemporary. He benefitted, I repeat, he benefitted from our initial political struggle”

Briggs, a native of Akuku-Toru Local Government Area who has held various political positions since 1999, accused Wike of stirring up political crises in multiple LGAs to retain his influence.
He pledged that the people of Rivers would not allow Wike to continue profiting from such controversies.
Briggs expressed disappointment that President Bola Tinubu might have failed to rein in his minister, Nyesom Wike.
He also urged Wike to apologize to the people of Rivers State for his alleged misconduct, warning that failure to do so could lead to further revelations about his actions.
