The Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, has overridden Governor Siminialayi Fubara’s refusal to assent to three bills that had been passed and sent to him for approval.
The bills, presented to the Governor a month ago, are the Rivers State Education (Return of Schools) (Amendment) Bill, the Rivers Electricity Market Bill, and the Rivers State Commissions of Inquiry Bill, 2024.
During their 94th legislative sitting on Thursday, lawmakers aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, voted to override the Governor’s veto after he withheld approval.

The bills were represented by Majority Leader Major Jack and debated by Assembly members. Speaker Amaewhule referenced Section 100(5) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which grants the House the authority to override a Governor’s refusal to assent.
When the matter was put to a vote, the lawmakers unanimously agreed to override the Governor’s decision.
Speaking after the vote, Amaewhule criticized Governor Fubara for his inaction and incompetence, asserting that the Governor could not hinder the state’s progress.
He emphasized that progress must continue.
A statement from the Speaker’s media aide, Martins Wachukwu, confirmed the unanimous vote to override the Governor’s veto.
Amaewhule further chastised Fubara, accusing him of believing he is above the Constitution, the judiciary, and state laws.
The Speaker reaffirmed that the House would continue to uphold the Constitution and democratic principles, stressing that, in accordance with Section 100(5) of the Constitution, the three bills are now law in Rivers State.

I really feel for them. Am sure they are regretting the over loyalty to their master. Just to keep themselves busy as it is said that man is a fighting animal therefore the nation being a community of fighters is a fighting unit any living organism which ceases to fight for itself is doomed to extinction.
