Supreme Court Hears APC’s Suit Challenging Rivers LG Election

The Supreme Court is set to hear two appeals filed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) contesting the legality of the Local Government (LG) election held in Rivers State in 2024.

The court will consider the case following the conclusion of preliminary proceedings led by Justice Uwani Abba-Aji, who chaired a five-member panel.

The panel directed the parties involved to file and exchange their respective briefs by February 10, 2025.

The appeals challenge a ruling by the Court of Appeal in Abuja, which overturned an earlier decision by Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Justice Lifu had ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withhold the voters’ register from the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), preventing the commission from proceeding with the LG election.

Justice Lifu’s decision was based on the argument that the necessary conditions for conducting the election had not been met by RSIEC.

However, the Court of Appeal ruled that the Federal High Court lacked jurisdiction to hear the case and issue the orders.
