The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU) has praised lecturer Chukwudi Okoye for his professionalism and maturity following a recent assault by a student at the institution.
On Tuesday, it was reported that a female student, Precious Mbakwe, allegedly assaulted Mr. Okoye after he interrupted her while she was recording a video in a university corridor.
The incident took place in the Faculty of Arts building at NAU, also known as UNIZIK.

In a viral video, Mbakwe, a third-year History and International Studies student, was seen recording a video when Mr. Okoye, a lecturer in the Department of Theatre Arts, walked by, tapping her and saying “excuse me.”
The student reacted with disdain, telling someone nearby, “Can you imagine, he just hit me.” The situation escalated as Mbakwe confronted Okoye, questioning his actions.
Other videos show the student dragging the lecturer by his shirt and tearing his brown native clothes. Despite being assaulted, Mr. Okoye did not retaliate.
Further footage showed Mr. Okoye with deep bite marks on his arms, and he was later seen receiving medical treatment, reportedly at the university clinic.
The university management responded by setting up a committee to investigate the incident, and the committee found Mbakwe guilty of misconduct, ultimately expelling her.
Following the student’s expulsion, ASUU released a statement on Friday commending Mr. Okoye for his exemplary conduct.
The union praised his restraint, calling it a testament to his character and professionalism.
“Dr. Okoye’s restraint and composure in the aftermath of the incident are a testament to his character and professionalism. His actions have not only brought honour to himself but also to our union and the university community at large,” the statement said
ASUU also lauded the Acting Vice-Chancellor of NAU, Joseph Ikechebelu, for his swift response, which reassured staff about their protection and reaffirmed the university’s commitment to maintaining a safe and respectful learning environment.
The statement was signed by ASUU’s Chairperson at UNIZIK, Kingsley Ubaoji, and Secretary, Joseph Onyejiaka.
