Why Court Order For Conduct Of Osun LG Election Is ‘Laughable’ – Ex-Commissioner

Remi Omowaiye, a former Commissioner for Works and Transportation and a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, has criticized the Ilesa High Court’s order for elections to be held for chairmanship and councillorship positions in the state’s 30 local government areas.

He argued that the Appeal Court ruling upheld the legitimacy of the local government officials elected under the previous APC administration, rendering the need for a new election unnecessary.

“Well, it’s quite unfortunate that the order is coming from a court in my town, this is a judicial rascality,” Omowaiye said on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday.

“There is a clear court judgement affirming the elected local government officials, there is no vacancy.

“So, you cannot have an election, and it is also laughable that a court of a lower jurisdiction is giving an interlocutory injunction against a judgement of the court of higher coordinate.”

On Friday, the Court directed the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) to proceed with elections for vacant chairmanship and councillorship positions in the state’s 30 local government areas.

This ruling came after Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, had previously called for the suspension of the elections. Fagbemi based his recommendation on a court ruling that reinstated local government officials who had been dismissed.

The state has been in turmoil over the planned local government elections, which have resulted in violence and loss of life.

The police confirmed that six individuals were killed on Monday during clashes triggered by a controversial Court of Appeal ruling that reinstated All Progressives Congress (APC)-elected local government officials.
