The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, has criticized the actions of her predecessor, Mudashiru Obasa, who appeared at the Assembly on Thursday, claiming he remains the Speaker.
Speaking to journalists at the Lagos State High Court, where Obasa filed a legal challenge against his removal, Meranda expressed her disapproval of his actions.
“I think to me that was just a show of shame because in our job we have numbers that form quorum,” she said of Obasa’s action at the Assembly a day earlier. “So if you are sitting with three or four members, you are only doing theatre.”

The crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly escalated on Thursday as Mudashiru Obasa, representing Agege 1 Constituency, returned to the Assembly Complex weeks after his colleagues elected Mojisola Meranda as his replacement.
The ousted Speaker arrived at the chambers under heavy security, accompanied by a team of armed, stern-looking uniformed officers. This marked his first public appearance at the Assembly since his removal on Monday, January 13, 2025.
Following Obasa’s removal, his then-deputy, Mojisola Meranda, was elected as the new Speaker, making history as the first female to lead the legislative body in the South-West state.
However, Obasa insisted that his removal did not adhere to the constitutional and procedural guidelines of the House.
“I have always said that I have never been removed from office. I am not against any removal,” Obasa said, hours after he returned to the Lagos State Assembly complex in the wake of his disputed position as the speaker.
“If you are going to do that, you must follow the rules of the House. It is constitutional to impeach and remove. You have to follow the dictates of the Constitution.”
