State Government Closes Schools For Five Weeks

The Bauchi State government, through the Ministry of Education, has announced the closure of all schools in the state for five weeks in preparation for the 2025 Ramadan fast.

This was stated in the approved school calendar for the 2024-2025 academic session.

Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria in Bauchi on Friday, the Ministry’s Information Officer, Jalaludeen Maina, confirmed that the holiday had been scheduled in the academic calendar long before now.

He explained that the closure would be in effect from March 1 to April 5 and would apply to all public and private primary, junior, and secondary schools, as well as higher institutions of learning across the state.

“Yes, all our schools will be closed, and this was included in our 2024-2025 approved academic calendar. Our students will not be fasting during Ramadan while in school.

“The five-week holiday is specifically for Ramadan, and once the fasting period ends, they will resume and continue their studies,” he stated.

Meanwhile, some parents have expressed concern over the impact of the prolonged break on their children’s education.

Sunita Joseph criticized the duration, stating, “Why should the Ramadan break be this long? The children may start forgetting what they learned before the break.”

Similarly, Ismail Raji urged the state government to reconsider its decision, warning that it could worsen the issue of out-of-school children.

Mohammed Isa also disapproved of the move, pointing out that Bauchi State already has one of the highest numbers of out-of-school children.

He stressed that the government should focus on implementing policies that encourage school enrollment rather than prolonged closures.
