The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed allegations of selectively conducting elections to fill vacancies caused by lawmakers’ defections.
Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, issued a statement on Friday in Abuja, responding to claims made by Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Mr. Oyekanmi pointed out that the governor did not provide specific instances of selective action.

However, Governor Fubara had accused the commission of failing to conduct elections to fill vacant seats in the Rivers State House of Assembly, where an ongoing crisis has led to a struggle for control between two factions.
Acknowledging the situation, Mr. Oyekanmi clarified that the matter was subjudice, with cases pending in court, including at the Supreme Court.
He stressed that INEC could not proceed with any election until a final judicial ruling was issued, to prevent actions that might later be deemed invalid or a waste of public resources.
He further urged public officials to be cautious in their statements to avoid misleading the public and undermining public institutions, particularly when legal proceedings were still ongoing
