Former presidential aide Doyin Okupe has passed away at the age of 72.
Family sources confirmed his death to Channels Television on Friday, although details surrounding the circumstances of his passing remain unclear. He was from Ogun State.
Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun expressed deep sorrow at the news, calling Okupe’s death a “personal loss.”
In a statement, Governor Abiodun said, “Receiving the news of the passing of my elder brother, Dr. Doyin Okupe has left me with a profound sense of personal loss, especially coming so soon after the transition of the Alaperu of Iperu Remo, Oba Adeleke Idowu-Basibo. Dr. Okupe’s departure leaves a void that will not be easily filled.”

The governor also reflected on Okupe’s character, saying, “Beyond his political and professional engagements, Dr. Okupe was an affable, easy-going, and principled individual who, despite never flaunting his credentials, played a significant role in Nigeria’s resistance to military rule.
Like many other democracy advocates, he endured detention and persecution under military regimes, standing firm in his convictions.”
He offered condolences to the Okupe family and prayed for the strength to cope with their loss.
In a 2023 interview, Okupe had shared his battle with cancer, revealing that the illness and chemotherapy led to significant weight loss.
“The first problem was cancer, and the chemotherapy makes you lose appetite, you have nausea, and even as you sustain for several months, you lose weight,” he said.
“When I started chemotherapy, I was 127kg, and then I came down to 97kg… the chemotherapy ended and I went back to 103kg.”

As a trained medical doctor, Okupe initially worked in healthcare before transitioning into politics.
He served as Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs under former President Goodluck Jonathan and later became the Director-General of the Labour Party (LP) presidential campaign for the 2023 election.
Although he played a significant role in the campaign, he eventually left the party, citing ideological differences.
Okupe was born in Iperu, Ogun State, and attended St. Jude’s School and Igbobi College in Lagos. He later studied medicine at the University of Ibadan in Oyo State.
