World Bank Adopts Obaseki’s EdoBEST Model For Educational Development In Low-Income Countries

The World Bank has recognized the Edo Basic Education Sector Transformation (EdoBEST) programme, an ambitious education reform initiative introduced by former Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki, as a model for improving education in low-income countries.

The global institution acknowledged the programme’s transformative impact on Edo State’s basic education sector since its inception in 2018.

EdoBEST was designed to enhance learning outcomes, improve teacher training, and integrate technology into the education system.

Its innovative approach has earned widespread praise for significantly boosting literacy and numeracy levels among public school pupils in the state.

Through the programme, at least 400,000 public school children benefited, while the government trained 20,000 teachers in digital skills and classroom management.

Additionally, 15,000 tablets, seven million exam materials, and 1.5 million textbooks were distributed across Edo State schools.

Inspired by its success, Bayelsa, Kwara, and Lagos States have adopted the EdoBEST model.

The World Bank’s endorsement underscores EdoBEST’s effectiveness in tackling key challenges in basic education.

The programme’s achievements under Obaseki’s leadership offer a replicable model for other nations and regions facing similar educational shortcomings.

In a 90-page report by Education Specialist Martín E. De Simone, titled “Improving Educational Outcomes for Children in Low-Income Countries: How the Progress and Pitfalls of Modernising Edo State’s Education Provides Lessons for the Future,” the World Bank stated: “The EdoBEST programme in Edo State, Nigeria, offers valuable insights for other low-income countries pursuing education reforms.”
