Tinubu Replaces Borno, Bayelsa REC Nominees

President Bola Tinubu has officially withdrawn the appointment of two Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The announcement was made in a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Tuesday.

According to the letter, Tinubu rescinded the appointments of Mohammad I. Ngoshe (Borno) and Owede Kosioma Eli (Bayelsa), who were initially nominated in a letter sent to the Senate on March 11.

While Umar Mukthar, the current Borno REC, was reappointed for a second term, Johnson Silnikiem was introduced as the new REC for Bayelsa.

Meanwhile, three other nominees—Umar Yusuf Garba (Kano), Saad Umar (Bauchi), and Chukwuemeka C. Ibeziako (Anambra)—retained their appointments.

The letter stated, “In compliance with Section 154(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), I am pleased to forward for Senate confirmation the appointment of the following five nominees as Resident Electoral Commissioners for INEC.”

It further clarified that the new letter superseded the previous one dated March 12, as the President had approved the reappointment of the Borno commissioner for a second term.

Tinubu expressed confidence that the Senate would confirm the nominees swiftly, assuring the lawmakers of his highest regard.
