Senate Postpones Motion On State Of Emergency In Rivers

The Senate on Wednesday postponed a motion to approve the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State to the next legislative session.

Earlier in the day, the Red Chamber had initially delayed the motion—its first agenda item—until 3 p.m. without providing a clear explanation.

Sponsored by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, the motion was expected to be debated and voted on during the morning session, but lawmakers unexpectedly chose to defer discussions.

The motion raises concerns over escalating tensions in Rivers State, which have disrupted governance and hindered the delivery of democratic benefits to residents.

It warns of a growing crisis, citing threats from militants and security reports of vandalized oil pipelines.

It also emphasizes the need for extraordinary measures to restore governance, peace, and security in the state.

For the emergency declaration to be approved, the Senate requires a two-thirds majority—at least 73 out of 109 senators.

On Tuesday, President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State due to the prolonged political crisis in the oil-rich South-South region.

In a nationwide address, Tinubu announced the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and all members of the State House of Assembly for six months.

To oversee the state’s affairs during this period, the president appointed Vice Admiral Ibok-ete Ibas (rtd.) as administrator for an initial six-month tenure.
