Senate Steps Down Motion To Approve State Of Emergency

The Senate postponed its scheduled debate on the state of emergency in Rivers State until 3 pm, without giving a clear reason for the delay.

The motion, sponsored by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, was initially slated for the morning session but was unexpectedly deferred.

The motion expresses concern about the rising tensions in Rivers State, which have disrupted governance and prevented citizens from benefiting from democracy.

“Worried that there is a clear and present danger of the crises as some militants had threatened fire and brimstone with security report of disturbing incidents of vandalization of oil pipelines

“Convinced that there is the need to provide adequate and extra ordinary measures to restore good governance, peace, order and security in Rivers State”.

The Senate needs a two-thirds majority vote (73 out of 109 senators) to approve the state of emergency declared in Rivers State.

President Tinubu announced the state of emergency on Tuesday, suspending Governor Fubara, his deputy, and the state assembly for six months.

He appointed retired Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas as administrator for the initial six-month period.
