Just a day after false reports of his dismissal circulated widely on social media, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, is currently leading the commission’s regular weekly management meeting.
Yesterday, Monday, a misleading WhatsApp message falsely asserted that President Bola Tinubu had sacked Prof. Yakubu and appointed Prof. Bashiru Olamilekan as his replacement.
This baseless message, lacking any credible source, caused confusion across various online platforms.

Responding to the unfounded rumors, INEC Chairman’s Chief Press Secretary, Rotimi Oyekanmi, firmly denied the claims, stating, “Please, disregard. It is not true.”
Prof. Yakubu is in the final stages of his second term as INEC Chairman, with his tenure expected to end later this year.
Today, Tuesday, INEC confirmed on its X (formerly Twitter) account that the weekly management meeting was underway at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja, with Prof. Yakubu presiding.

Among the National Commissioners present at the meeting are Mr. Sam Olumekun, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, Mr. Kenneth Ukeagu, Prof. Abdullahi Abdu Zuru, and Dr. Baba Bila. The meeting is anticipated to address significant decisions related to electoral matters.
The post read, “The Independent National Electoral Commission’s weekly meeting began earlier today at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja, with the Hon. Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu superintending.
