INEC Speaks On Alleged Sack Of Chairman Mahmood Yakubu

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed social media reports claiming that President Bola Tinubu has dismissed its Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.

A widely circulated WhatsApp message had falsely stated that Prof. Yakubu had been replaced by a Prof. Olamilekan.

The message, which lacked any source attribution, claimed, “INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmud Yakubu has been replaced with Prof. Bashiru Olamilekan by President Tinubu.”

In response to an inquiry from Vanguard, the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the INEC Chairman, Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, simply stated, “Please, disregard. It is not true.”

Prof. Yakubu, who is nearing the end of his second term, is expected to leave office towards the end of the year.

The process for appointing an INEC chairman involves the President nominating a candidate, who then undergoes security screening by the Department of State Services (DSS).

Following this screening, the President submits the nominee’s name to the National Council of State for an advisory review. If approved, the President then forwards the name to the Senate for screening and confirmation.
