Former Delta Governor Dumps PDP For APC

Former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has officially left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Okowa, who served as the running mate to Atiku Abubakar in the 2023 presidential election, confirmed his defection during an interview with ARISE NEWS on Wednesday.

This announcement came shortly after the current governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, also declared his move from the PDP to the APC.

Senator James Manager revealed the development following a six-hour strategic meeting at the Government House in Asaba.

“All PDP members in Delta, including the governor, ex-Governor Okowa, the Speaker, the state party chairman, and all local government chairmen, have decided to join the APC,” he stated. “We cannot remain on a sinking ship.”

Delta State’s Commissioner for Information, Mr. Aniagwu Charles, confirmed the widespread political shift, citing the need for a new direction to bolster governance and development in the state.

He used a vivid metaphor, saying, “It’s time to change our drinking pattern—the taste of the PDP, like old palm wine, has changed, and it’s time for a new party.”

Aniagwu emphasized that the decision was a collective one among the PDP’s top leadership and stakeholders in Delta State, with a public declaration planned for Monday. “By God’s grace, we will make a major statement on Monday confirming our move to the APC,” he added.

The mass defection marks a major shakeup in Delta State politics and could have broader implications for the South-South region, a traditional PDP stronghold.

Okowa and Oborevwori are set to be formally received by Vice President Kashim Shettima on Monday.
