Lalong Mourns As Former Deputy Governor Dies

Former Plateau State Governor and current Senator for Plateau South, Simon Bako Lalong, has expressed deep sadness over the death of his former deputy, Prof. Sonni Tyoden, who passed away on Sunday in Jos at the age of 75.

In a statement released by his media aide, Makut Macham, on Sunday, Lalong led a delegation of former cabinet members to Tyoden’s Rayfield residence to offer condolences to his family.

Lalong described Tyoden as a trusted political ally, confidant, teacher, and mentor who served as Deputy Governor of Plateau State from 2015 to 2023 under the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration.

He highlighted Tyoden’s “stability, wisdom, and experience” which significantly contributed to their successful eight-year tenure.

“Prof. Tyoden left indelible footprints in the sands of time, having served the nation in various capacities, including as Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, where he transformed the institution’s fortunes,” Lalong stated.

The senator also praised Tyoden’s academic contributions, noting his mentorship of numerous students who have excelled in various professional fields.

He offered prayers for the repose of Tyoden’s soul and extended condolences to his widow, Mrs. Abigail Tyoden, their children, and the entire family.

Gyenu Tyoden, speaking on behalf of the family, expressed gratitude for Lalong’s visit and acknowledged the strong partnership between the deceased and the former governor.

He affirmed the family’s pride in Tyoden’s legacy of public service and announced that burial arrangements would be communicated in the coming days.

Professor Sonni Gwanle Tyoden, a former Deputy Governor of Plateau State and former Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, died on Sunday morning after a brief illness.

His passing was confirmed by his former Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Doman Wetkum.

The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Plateau State, Mr. Rufus Bature, also mourned Tyoden’s death, describing it as a significant loss to the state and the nation.

He remembered Tyoden as a humble, calm, and patient individual who would be greatly missed.
