Abbas Announces National Assembly Next Move To Resolve Rivers Crisis

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, announced on Tuesday that the National Assembly will soon establish a high-level reconciliation committee to address the escalating political crisis in Rivers State.

The conflict between the suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his former political mentor, current FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, has intensified, leading to violent attacks on oil installations, the declaration of a state of emergency, and the suspension of the governor and state assembly members loyal to Wike.

Speaking at the resumption of plenary after the Easter and Sallah recess, Abbas stated that the planned committee, a joint effort with the Senate, will consist of respected national figures tasked with facilitating dialogue, promoting peace, and supporting the restoration of democratic order in Rivers State and other regions affected by conflict.

“In the coming weeks, we shall work with the Senate to constitute a high-level Committee on Reconciliation, comprising respected national figures, to facilitate dialogue, promote peace, and support the restoration of democratic order in Rivers State and other conflict-affected regions,” he informed the lawmakers.

This announcement follows the House’s endorsement weeks prior of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State and the subsequent inauguration of a 21-member ad hoc committee to oversee the interim administration in the state.

This oversight committee, led by House Leader Prof Julius Ihonvbere, has already begun consultations with key stakeholders.

Abbas reaffirmed the House’s commitment to its constitutional responsibilities and to national stability, emphasizing that this reconciliation initiative is a response to the complex challenges facing the political leadership of the state.
