Former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, currently the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has referred to his successor, Siminalayi Fubara, as his “boy” and “son,” amidst their ongoing political conflict.

Wike stated in a BBC Pidgin interview that while he is open to peace initiatives, particularly those proposed by President Bola Tinubu, he maintains his stance regarding Fubara.

“That boy is my boy, my son. How can I fight a battle with him? Those I fight are people who want to steal what they did not work for. The President called me to make peace; I said, ‘Boss, how will you tell me to make peace and I won’t?’” he said.

The political dispute between Wike and Fubara has led to a significant crisis in Rivers State. President Tinubu intervened by declaring a state of emergency, suspending Fubara, his deputy, and the House of Assembly, and appointing a sole administrator.

This decision sparked protests and counter-protests, and 11 PDP governors filed a lawsuit at the Supreme Court to challenge the declaration.

The National Assembly, however, urged the court to dismiss the suit, arguing it lacked merit and jurisdiction, and requested N1 billion in costs from the plaintiffs.

Fubara, on May 11, indicated he was not desperate to return to office, stating, “Do you even know if I want to go back there? My spirit has already left there.”

He also cautioned that certain actions by his supporters had exacerbated the situation.
