The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Senate Caucus stated on Tuesday that while it is open to a coalition to unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 elections, such an alliance must be driven by political parties, not individuals.
Following a meeting in Abuja, Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro (Benue South), told journalists that the caucus believes political parties should coordinate any coalition efforts.
He emphasized, “Senate Caucus of the PDP states that it is not adverse to the idea and ideals of coalition,” but “The caucus advises that any such coalition should be driven by political parties and not individuals.”

Moro added that as the largest opposition party, “the PDP’s umbrella is big enough to accommodate all persons desirous of coalition. Therefore, if a coalition becomes necessary, the PDP should drive it.”
This statement comes after key political figures, including PDP’s 2023 presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, announced on March 20 their intention to form a coalition to challenge Tinubu’s re-election bid.
This announcement sparked considerable debate among political observers.
Subsequently, the PDP Governors’ Forum, led by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, declared at a recent Ibadan meeting that the party would not participate in any merger or coalition before 2027.
Moro’s comments also surface amid reports that Atiku is considering running on another party’s platform, with speculation that he and Obi have agreed to collaborate under the Action Democratic Congress (ADC) banner.
Atiku’s media adviser, Paul Ibe, recently confirmed that while no power-sharing deal is finalized, discussions are ongoing to build a credible alternative platform, stating, “The focus now is on building a viable platform.”
The PDP Senate Caucus also dismissed claims of the party’s collapse, insisting it remains strong and is actively repositioning itself.
They acknowledged that “The current crisis in the PDP is not unique. Other opposition parties—and even the ruling APC—are facing similar internal challenges.”
The caucus urged party members to remain steadfast and loyal, expressing confidence that internal reforms will strengthen the PDP.
“The series of activities lined up by the party leadership will breathe new life into the PDP and prepare it to compete effectively in future elections,” they affirmed.
Finally, the lawmakers underscored the importance of a strong opposition in a functional democracy.
They concluded, “The beauty of democracy lies in the existence of a robust opposition to hold the ruling party accountable. Celebrating the emasculation of opposition parties and a drift towards a one-party state does not advance democratic ideals. The PDP Senate Caucus is not averse to the idea and ideals of coalition. It believes that the synthesis of ideas and harmonisation of ideals only enriches democracy.”
