Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, the Administrator of Rivers State, has expressed confidence that the ongoing political crisis in the state can be resolved peacefully.
Speaking at the Government House in Port Harcourt during an event commemorating the 58th anniversary of Rivers State’s creation, Ibas described the crisis as a political dispute, not a war, emphasizing that it could be settled through dialogue.
The former Chief of Naval Staff stressed that most conflicts, no matter how severe, eventually end through negotiation.
He cited global examples where enduring political tensions and wars were resolved when bold leadership chose dialogue over division.
He pointed out that such resolutions often occurred not because differences disappeared but because leaders made compromises for the common good.

Ibas called for introspection, noting that the current situation falls short of the aspirations of the state’s founding fathers.
He urged leaders to prioritize the people’s interests, warning that the public is observant and deserves sincere leadership.
He also defended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to impose a state of emergency in Rivers, describing it as a timely move that averted looming chaos.
The administrator criticized certain elders and religious leaders for taking sides rather than playing a constructive mediating role.
He also questioned the recent criticisms of the emergency declaration, asking where those voices were when political actors exploited divisions for personal gain.
He urged the people of Rivers to reflect on the events and choices that led to the crisis and called on leaders to rise above personal ambitions for the sake of the state.
Highlighting Rivers State’s critical role in the nation’s economy, Ibas noted that it trails only Lagos in output and accounts for about 40% of Nigeria’s onshore oil production.
Reflecting on his service, he described his time as administrator as one of the highest honours of his life and thanked the people for their support. He also used the occasion to advocate for every child’s right to quality education, healthcare, and a safe environment.
In his welcome address, the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Ibibia Worika, emphasized the importance of unity and resilience in building a stronger Rivers State.
The event also featured a keynote lecture by development communication expert Professor Godwin Okon titled “Rivers State Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow: Search for Sustainable Peace and Opportunities for Sustainable Development.”
The lecture explored the state’s progress, ongoing challenges, and future potential, calling on citizens to work together for peace and prosperity.
