Former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, has stated that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) plays a vital role in Nigeria’s democratic journey and that the nation’s stability is closely linked to the party’s survival.
Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Political Paradigm on Tuesday, Lamido, a founding member of the PDP, warned that if the party were to collapse, it could pave the way for authoritarian rule, with the country potentially ending up under the leadership of a presidential “emperor.”

Lamido said, “If the PDP collapses, Nigeria will collapse. Where there is no opposition, then there will be an emperor. When the party collapses, then you have an emperor all over Nigeria, and all emperors are destroyed by their greed.
“The PDP is Nigeria’s history in the last 25 years, therefore, look at the bigger picture. If the party collapses, it is Nigeria’s history which collapses.”
Sule Lamido stated that if the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had not restored democratic governance in 1999, former military ruler Muhammadu Buhari would not have been able to assume the presidency under the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2015.
He further emphasized that without the PDP establishing the groundwork for Nigeria’s Fourth Republic, Bola Tinubu, a former Lagos State governor, would not have succeeded Buhari in 2023.
Lamido also asserted that President Tinubu requires the PDP to function as a strong opposition in order to ensure accountability in his administration.
“More than anybody, Tinubu needs PDP to be chasing him, to be on his toes, but when it collapses, nobody will be chasing him; he will be chasing himself,” he said, equivocally stating that he won’t leave the PDP despite the many crises rocking the party.
