Adekunle Akinlade, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) deputy governorship candidate in Ogun State during the 2023 election, announced his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state on Tuesday.
This move comes barely a week after he resigned from the PDP.
Akinlade, also known as Triple A, stated last Monday in Abeokuta that his departure from the PDP was due to “persistent and unresolved internal crises” within the state chapter of the party.

The former House of Representatives member, who was the governorship candidate for the Allied People’s Movement (APM) in the 2019 election, had previously left the APC in the run-up to the 2023 election.
He was granted a waiver to join the PDP and ran as the deputy to Ladi Adebutu, who lost to the APC’s Governor Dapo Abiodun.
Speaking to journalists in Abeokuta on Tuesday, Akinlade confirmed he was rejoining the APC along with his loyalists from the PDP.
He stated that this decision was made unanimously after a meeting held earlier that day, with an agreement to align with Governor Dapo Abiodun as the party’s leader. Akinlade asserted that the PDP’s crisis had become “beyond redemption.”
“The whole APM family that went to PDP with me, we have all decided that we are going back to APC and by tonight or tomorrow we will try to meet with the Governor and once we have met with the Governor, we will tell him about the decision we have made today that we are back home,” Akinlade said.
He added, “We believe that the family will have an open hand to accommodate us back into the fold. Governor Dapo Abiodun is the leader of the party, we are going to align with that leadership. Aremo Olusegun Osoba is the father of party, we will align with that. So, we will align with the party fully and whoever is a member of the party who falls into that leadership, we will work with that person.”
Regarding the planned coalition by major political figures, Akinlade described those behind the move as a group of “vindictive and ambitious politicians who have nothing to offer Nigeria.”
He claimed that many proponents of the coalition are former governors, ministers, and government officials “hungry for powers and financial privileges they enjoyed while in government.”
