Baba-Ahmed Speaks On ADC Coalition, El-Rufai’s Involvement

Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, the Labour Party’s Vice Presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has expressed his willingness to collaborate with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition, which the opposition has adopted to unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027.

However, he clarified that he has not abandoned the Labour Party. Baba-Ahmed made these statements during an interview with Arise News on Thursday.

“I have not left Labour Party. I am considering the coalition who have adopted ADC,” Baba-Ahmed stated.

Baba-Ahmed further suggested that the opposition is now employing a strategy similar to the one used by Bola Tinubu with former President Muhammadu Buhari.

He described Buhari as a “distant anointed” leader after his third electoral loss, which, according to Baba-Ahmed, Tinubu capitalized on.

“But they are also playing somebody else’s game. This game is Tinubu’s game. And I’m not praising him in any way whatsoever, but everyone must understand the situation as it were,” he remarked.

He elaborated on the 2015 scenario: “Buhari, after losing the third time, cried to the world that he’s done with politics, and that’s when it began. Tinubu saw the opportunity. It was easy to convince Buhari to come back because he carries a lot of baggage and survives from political donations.”

Spotting both the contrast and similarity between the APC coalition that brought Buhari to power and the current ADC coalition, Baba-Ahmed noted that the latter lacks a “distant anointed” figure like the APC had. This, he believes, will lead to a very close contest, a tight struggle, and potentially a “not-so-clean primary.”

Regarding former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s involvement, Baba-Ahmed found it “unbelievable” that El-Rufai, who supported Tinubu in the previous elections, is now collaborating with the opposition to unseat him in 2027.

He commented, “With due respect, I remember everything between El-Rufai and many other leaders whom he now goes and kneels down before to greet again. I’m gasping for air; I don’t understand what is going on.”

He also criticized the long-standing political elite, stating, “There are people who have been in government for 24 years, and they’ve been out for only 2 years, yet they are crying and shouting that we must throw this government out.”
