List Of States US Government Warned Citizens Against Visiting In Nigeria [FULL LIST]

The United States government has issued a travel warning advising its citizens against traveling to 18 Nigerian states, citing a high risk from terrorism, kidnapping, armed gangs, violent crime, and inconsistent healthcare services.

In a statement published on its website by the US Mission in Nigeria, Americans were urged to “reconsider travel” to the country, emphasizing that all parts of Nigeria carry “significant security risks.”

The advisory categorizes 18 states under Level 4 – the highest threat level – advising Americans to avoid travel to these areas for any reason.

These states are listed as follows:

  • Due to terrorism and kidnapping: Borno, Yobe, Kogi, and northern Adamawa.
  • Due to kidnapping: Bauchi, Gombe, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, and Zamfara.
  • Due to crime, kidnapping, and armed gangs: Abia, Anambra, Bayelsa, Delta, Enugu, Imo, and Rivers (with the exception of Port Harcourt).

The advisory also highlighted the poor state of Nigeria’s healthcare system, warning that US citizens should not expect medical care to be comparable to that in the United States.

It noted a scarcity of common medicines, unreliable emergency services, and the risk of counterfeit drugs.

Travelers who still choose to visit Nigeria are advised to carry all necessary medications, ensure their vaccinations are updated, purchase medical evacuation insurance, and prepare backup plans for emergencies.

Additionally, the advisory recommended staying alert, carrying proper identification, avoiding large gatherings, and enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive updates and enable tracking in emergencies.
