There was a brief drama in the Senate on Tuesday when lawmakers initially refused to second a motion moved by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, seeking the repatriation of Nigerian women reportedly being abused in Libyan prisons.
The incident took place during discussions on a motion addressing the violation of the rights of Nigerian migrants in Libya.
Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), urged the Senate to intervene in the suffering of Nigerian women allegedly languishing in Libyan detention facilities.

She claimed that some of these women were being sexually assaulted by prison officials and coerced into having children while imprisoned.
The senator, therefore, appealed to the upper chamber to direct the Nigerian Immigration Service to work with Libyan authorities to secure their return home.
However, after her presentation, when Senate President Godswill Akpabio requested a seconder for the motion—a necessary step before debate—none of the senators, including female members, responded.
The chamber remained silent until Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele eventually rose to second the motion, enabling deliberations to proceed.
