Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has labeled President Donald Trump’s claims of “Christian genocide” and his subsequent “threat of military action” against Nigeria as an “embarrassment to the country.”
Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), made the remarks during Wednesday’s edition of Channels Television’s Politics Today, directly blaming the situation on the “Nigerian government’s inability to tackle insecurity.”
Falana cited the government’s failure to adequately address crimes such as “kidnapping for ransom, among others.”

He questioned the nation’s standing, asking rhetorically: “Why have we brought this embarrassment to ourselves as a people that we are being treated as a neocolony of the United States of America?”
He added that Nigeria is unable to challenge Trump directly, asking, “We cannot even challenge Mr Trump, ‘How dare you? Where is this hypocrisy coming from?’”
The senior lawyer’s comments followed Trump’s declaration of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) last week over what the U.S. President termed a “mass slaughter of Christians.”

Trump later “threatened military action” in the West African nation if authorities failed to quickly address the issue, writing on his Truth Social platform: “I am hereby instructing our Department of War to prepare for possible action. If we attack, it will be fast, vicious, and sweet, just like the terrorist thugs attack our CHERISHED Christians! WARNING: THE NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT BETTER MOVE FAST!”
Weighing in on the matter, Falana asserted that the recent development must serve as a “wake-up call for Nigeria to put its house in order.”
He said on the current affairs show: “For us as a people and for the government of Nigeria, we must now take Mr Trump’s warning as a wake-up call.”
Falana concluded by noting he could see a change in government transparency: “I can see evidence that the government is now giving information to the public and the international community on efforts being made to wage a counter-insurgency operation. We are now being told how many people are being taken to court.”
