Impeachment: Rivers Assembly Fails To Reconvene After Adjourning Proceedings To Meet Today

🔊 Listen To Post

The Rivers State House of Assembly, under the leadership of Speaker Martin Amaewhule, did not reconvene for plenary on Thursday, marking one week since its previous adjournment.

During the first legislative session of 2026 held last Thursday, the House had initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Deputy Governor, Prof. Ngozi Odu.

These proceedings were based on accusations of “gross misconduct,” which included allegations regarding the destruction of the state assembly complex and the disbursement of funds without legislative authorization.

At the conclusion of that initial session, the House had officially adjourned its proceedings until January 15, 2026.

However, reports from a source who visited the assembly’s current meeting location—the conference hall of the official legislative quarters situated along Aba Road—indicated that by noon on Thursday, there was no indication that the lawmakers intended to meet.

As of now, the leadership of the Assembly has offered no public reason for the failure to sit, and no alternative date for a future resumption has been communicated.
