Sit-At-Home: Soludo Orders Suspension Of Absent Students

The Anambra State Government has announced that students who miss school on Mondays without a legitimate reason will be handed a one-week suspension.

This new policy is part of a intensified campaign to ensure that academic schedules are fully observed throughout the state.

Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, the Commissioner for Education, shared this update during a meeting with the leadership of two Onitsha schools who were questioned regarding their low Monday attendance rates.

The Commissioner explained that the action is based on a mandate from Governor Chukwuma Soludo, aimed at permanently stopping the academic interruptions caused by the recurring Monday sit-at-home orders in the region.

Regarding the government’s stance, Chuma-Udeh stated:“This measure is in line with the state government’s resolve to ensure full resumption of academic activities on Mondays across Anambra.”

She further emphasized the importance of following the new rules, saying:“I urge schools to comply with the directive.”

The two institutions involved, Mount Olive School and Spring Field Academy in GRA, Onitsha, were called to account for their attendance figures.

While Mount Olive reported that their numbers were beginning to rise, Spring Field Academy pointed to a lack of willingness from parents to send their children out at the start of the week.

Despite these challenges, both institutions promised to align with the state’s requirements.

Alongside these enforcement efforts, the Ministry of Education successfully held the 2026 Transition Placement Examination at various locations.

The Commissioner, accompanied by Permanent Secretary Dr. Ifeoma Agbaizu, visited several sites including Nnamdi Azikiwe University Demonstration School and Igwebuike Grammar School in Awka to oversee the process.

The state continues to reiterate its goal of maintaining a stable and uninterrupted learning environment for all students.
